Dive into the Fascinating World of Corals at Papua Paradise Eco Resort – Coral Workshop 21st – 22nd May 2025
At Papua Paradise Eco Resort we believe in offering our guests not only unforgettable diving experiences but also the chance to learn about and contribute to the preservation of the marine environment. By gaining a deeper understanding of coral reefs and the delicate ecosystems they support, you’ll leave with not only amazing memories but also a greater sense of responsibility for the ocean’s health.
Join us at Papua Paradise Eco Resort and immerse yourself in the breathtaking world of coral reefs with a 2-day workshop on the 21st and 22nd of May 2025 led by Stephen Moldzio, a marine biologist specialized in underwater photography & microscopy, diving education, environmentalism, climate protection and green corals.
Corals are the architects of the ocean, quietly building the vibrant and diverse underwater habitats that support some of the world’s most incredible marine life. These intricate organisms create the foundations of coral reefs, which are home to countless species, from colorful fish to gentle sea turtles. At Papua Paradise Eco Resort, we are offering an immersive 2-day coral workshop that allows you to take a closer look at these fascinating animals and their critical role in the marine ecosystem.
Day 1: Introduction to Coral Reefs and Coral Identification
The first day of the workshop focuses on coral reef ecology and identification. You’ll be introduced to the “Indo-Pacific Coral Finder,” a powerful tool used for systematic coral identification. This guide will allow you to identify any hard coral down to its genus, a skill that will prove invaluable during your dives.
We begin with two morning dives, during which you’ll have the chance to observe live corals in their natural habitat. As you scan the reef, you’ll see the complexity of these living structures firsthand. Every coral you encounter plays a vital role in maintaining the balance of the reef ecosystem by providing shelter for marine life and helping to maintain the health of the ocean’s biodiversity.
After the morning dives, the learning continues with an engaging coral presentation in the evening. During this session, you’ll dive deeper into coral reef ecology, exploring topics such as reef formation and erosion, the concept of zonation (how different parts of the reef are structured), and the various types of reefs found in the Indo-Pacific. You’ll also gain an understanding of the different coral groups and their unique characteristics. This foundational knowledge will help you better appreciate the reef’s complexity and its importance to marine life.
Day 2: Hands-On Coral Identification and Fluorescence Night Dive
On the second day, the focus shifts to a more hands-on approach to coral identification. During two day dives, participants will collect dead, broken coral fragments from the ocean floor, which will then be examined under stereomicroscopes. This close-up analysis allows you to observe the fine details of coral skeletons, helping you distinguish between different genera of hard corals.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll not only have a deeper appreciation for the intricate structure of corals but also be able to identify them confidently. To celebrate your newly acquired skills, you’ll receive a certificate of participation. A fun coral quiz will also be held, giving you the chance to test your knowledge in an engaging and interactive way.
One of the most exciting aspects of the workshop is the fluorescence night dive, a truly magical experience. Equipped with blue light torches, you’ll descend into the darkened ocean to witness the reef glowing with neon colors. This phenomenon, known as coral fluorescence, occurs when corals absorb blue light and emit vibrant hues of green, pink, and yellow, creating an otherworldly underwater scene.
